american classic! - Short Film

Software: After Effects, Maya, Illustrator

Amid the turbulence of the 2020 US election, it was only a matter of time until the context in which my design work was made would become more significant. I responded to the events that transpired by poking fun at the bipartisanship of American politics.

I wanted the visuals to embrace tackiness in all aspects of my designs.
I found off-brand potato chip packaging to be quite charming, so I began to explore ways this personality could be reinforced with movement.

When planning the political undertones of this short, I saw parallels between a two-party system and brands of potato chips. At its core, any type of chip is still junk food, it just happens to be packaged differently.
I wanted there to be a clear distinction between the monotony within the gas station and the brightness outside of it.

As a common snack chosen for trips by others, it was amusing to picture one leaving on its own accord. My intention was to lean into escapism, but recongize how permeable it can be to reality.
